Paso-Primero Wine - Masterclass
‘One of the most joyous wines I’ve tried this year…’ – Fiona Beckett, The Guardian.
Paso-Primero isn’t an ordinary wine brand. We’re not generational grape farmers. We’re not industry-disruptor tech bro’s trying to revolutionise the drinks sector. We’re not even second career chancers from London.
We’re two people who ran away to join the wine circus and forced our way into the main event.
Paso Primero translates to First Step and is a really interesting wine project that began in 2015 in Somontano run by Thomas and Emma Holt. They hail from Shropshire (England) and previously made wine in Niagara, Canada, but they found that the winters there were just a bit too harsh for them.
So after a decade of making and selling wines for other people, they decided it was time to do their own thing and they headed to Spain, where they found a winery in Somontano called Batan de Salas who they could work for, and at the same time build up their own wine brand.
We had targeted a region in northern Spain called Somontano as our first port of call but after a shaky start we were beginning to get nervous. We booked one final meeting before we were due to leave and finally the stars aligned.
That meeting was with Batan de Salas, a young, family run winery who were able to see our winemaking vision and shared our passion for great wines. From that cautious first encounter they have become firm friends and a key part of our lives as well as our careers.
Together we’ve revitalised vineyards, won international awards and created a portfolio of wines that we never thought possible. They’ve pushed us, supported us and shared in our successes. It’s extraordinary to think of how far we’ve come and still be looking to the future but we believe there is so much more to come and the story has plenty more chapters to go.
