Artisans ancient cheese revival – Masterclass
Artisan Cheesemakers Reviving British Cheese Traditions
In the mid-20th century, the mass production of cheese in the UK nearly wiped out many traditional varieties, including Wensleydale, Lancashire, and Ceredigion cheeses. But thanks to a resurgence of interest in artisan food production, some of these ancient recipes are being brought back to life.
A Glimpse into the Past and Present of British Cheese
In 1939, there were around 220 raw-milk Lancashire cheesemakers, but by 2023, only one remained—Kirkham’s. However, a glimmer of hope emerged in March 2024 when Lowfields, a new creamy Lancashire cheese, joined the ranks of artisan producers. This marks a turning point in the revival of traditional British cheesemaking.
Thanks to a growing movement of skilled cheesemakers, the UK is starting to regain what the French never lost: terroir in cheese. Just as wine reflects its region, so does cheese—its flavour varies depending on the breed of cows, the pasture they graze on, and even the cellars in which the cheese matures. Artisan producers like Cowgill are embracing this unique, regional character in their cheeses.
